Meningitis outbreak - an important update from our Vice-Chancellor

Daffodils on campus

From Professor Georgina Randsley de Moura | Acting Vice-Chancellor & President

You will be aware there is an outbreak of meningitis in the Canterbury area, and that the university is affected.

I am deeply saddened to share the news that one of our students has died. This is devastating news, and our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends and all those who knew them. We are also aware that there are some of our community in hospital, who are also in our thoughts.

You will have seen the letter from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) providing precautionary guidance – please read this carefully. We are working closely with, and following advice from, the UKHSA to ensure that all appropriate steps are being taken and that anyone who is identified as at risk is contacted directly.

Things are fast moving, and in light of the developing situation we have made the decision that there will be no in-person assessments this week. Your School will be in touch with further details about alternative arrangements.

Campus will remain open, but please keep an eye on your emails as we will continue to provide updates.

Our priority is to support those closest to the students affected. Out of respect for them, we will not be sharing further details at this time. I also ask that we respect the privacy of the families and those affected, particularly on social media.

Events like this affect people in different ways, and I recognise that many of us will feel shocked, distressed or in need of support. Support services are available for both students and staff, and I encourage anyone who needs to talk to reach out.

Students can access support through our Student Support and Wellbeing teams, and staff can access confidential help through the Employee Assistance Programme. If you are concerned about a friend, colleague or student, please encourage them to seek support or contact the relevant wellbeing teams.

I want to thank you for the way you are looking after each other during this difficult time. Our community is strongest when we look after one another. Please continue to take care of yourselves and those around you.

With deepest sympathy,

George
