Peer-Assisted Learning

Starting at Kent is the beginning of something new and you don't have to do it alone. Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) connects you with students who have already been where you are and are here to help you succeed. PAL gives you a space to learn with others, ask questions, and feel part of your academic community from the start.

What is PAL?

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a student-led programme designed to support you as you start university.

In relaxed group sessions, PAL Leaders, students from your course who’ve successfully completed their first year, create a friendly space where you can ask questions, share ideas, and learn together.

This isn’t extra teaching or another lecture. It’s a supportive space where you can build your confidence, develop your understanding, and feel part of your academic community from the start.

With PAL, you can:

  • Get to know people on your course and build connections that help you feel at home.
  • Ask questions, test ideas, and take part in discussions in a relaxed environment.
  • Work through topics with PAL Leaders who understand what you're learning and how to approach it.
  • Pick up study strategies and approaches to build habits that support your progress.
  • Gain insight into your course and feel more confident navigating your first year.
  • Students who take part in PAL often feel more prepared, more connected, and more able to succeed.

I felt much more confident in dealing with new material in my modules

Why PAL Leaders matter

Your PAL Leaders are students who've recently been in your position.  They know what it's like to start at Kent, and they're here to help you succeed.

They don't teach your course, instead, they guide discussions, share their experience, and help you find your own answers in a supportive environment.

Interested in becoming a PAL Leader.  Find out more on our PAL Leaders web page.

PAL is delivered in partnership with your Academic School and Skills for Academic Success (SAS), combining academic expertise with student experience to support you throughout your journey.

Get involved in PAL

Your PAL sessions are a great way to meet people, build confidence and get more out of your course, right from the start.

You don't need to prepare anything or have all the answers.  PAL is your space to connect, ask questions and grow in confidence.
