Gospel music comes to Canterbury Cathedral in Support of Refugee and Asylum-Seeking Students.
This Autumn term, the University of Kent marks its 60th anniversary and newly awarded University of Sanctuary Status with a powerful evening of music, unity, and hope at Voices for Sanctuary, a special gospel concert hosted in the awe-inspiring setting of Canterbury Cathedral.
Hosted by our Chancellor, broadcaster and musician YolanDa Brown OBE DL and produced by acclaimed gospel musical director Goziam Okogwu (The Rite Collective), the event will take place on Friday 31 October 2025.
The evening will feature performances from three of the UK’s leading gospel choirs:
• University of Kent Gospel Choir – Two-time winners of University Gospel Choir of the Year (UGCY), celebrated for their inspiring vocals and heartfelt performances.
• Canterbury Christ Church Gospel Choir – A cornerstone of the CCU community since 2005, known for soulful melodies and uplifting energy.
• Clive Brown and Urban Soul (CBUS) – A 20+ member collective led by this defining figure in British gospel music, renowned for his rich vocal arrangements and transformative performances.
Audiences will also hear words from The Rt Revd Dr Rose Hudson-Wilkin, Bishop of Dover; Professor Georgina Randsley de Moura, Acting Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Kent; and students who have found sanctuary in Canterbury. The concert will raise vital funds to support refugee and asylum-seeking students, helping them to rebuild their lives through education, integrate into the Kent community, and fulfil their potential.
‘This concert is a celebration of hope, resilience, and the power of music to bring people together,” said Professor Randsley de Moura. ‘Every ticket sold helps change the story for students who have sought sanctuary here.’
