The University of Kent recognises that, as an institution, we have a significant role to play in ensuring that we challenge and deconstruct systemic racism and all forms of discrimination at the University and beyond. We pledge that the University will do better and be better, and strive to be a place where all individuals will feel welcome in, supported by, and proud of.      

The Student Success (EDI) Project is an institutional research project investigating student attainment and retention, with a particular focus on BME students.

The award-winning project has introduced several initiatives to improve your learning experience, including student progress profiles and the virtual student adviser. They also run Inspirational Speaker events which feature BME speakers and inspire our students. View the programme.

Black Student Voices is a research project led by students to amplify and create change for Black students at the University of Kent.     

#Black365 runs all year and celebrates Black culture, heritage and achievements at Kent     

Black History Month is celebrated every October and shines a spotlight on Black culture, heritage and achievements

Worldfest, is the University’s annual festival of multiculturalism and diversity, which takes place at both Canterbury and Medway campuses in the spring term.

Each year we hold a variety of events and activities to celebrate Kent’s diverse student population.The more students who get involved the better. We would like to hear from you if you would like to be involved. Please email Becky Lamyman for further details.

The Worldfest Bitesize Fund has been established to enable University of Kent student societies to apply for a financial award of up to £350 to help run a multicultural event. Examples of events and celebrations that we have supported include Diwali, Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving, Kent African Summit, Newroz, Holi, African Evening Gala, Discover Islam, Japanese Cultural Festival, Asian Fusion and a Thai Festival. Deadline for applications is the 15th day of every month.  

Kent Students' Union has a number of student networks. The Racially and Ethnically Margnisalised People (REMP) student network aims to represent and act as the voice for, as well as promote, extend and defend the rights of ethnic minority students to both the University and Kent Students' Union. They also organise events to help celebrate ethnic minority students rights at the University.

We have developed an online reporting tool which empowers students to record details of incidents such as sexual misconduct and assault, harassment, relationship abuse or hate incidents, and get support from an adviser
