ChatGPT Edu Onboarding

ChatGPT Edu

Read the guidance below to get set up using ChatGPT Edu through your Kent login

Getting started

As you will have seen, Kent has recently announced that all staff and students at the University will have access to ChatGPT Edu.

This page contains information on activating and accessing your ChatGPT Edu account through your Kent IT account.

Whether you are a member of staff or a student, your ChatGPT Edu account (should you wish to have one) will be associated with your short-form email address (also known as your username). This will be in the format abc123@kent.ac.uk.

If you are a member of staff and you already have a ChatGPT account associated with your short-form Kent email address (i.e. abc123@kent.ac.uk), please read step number 6 in the "Step-by-step guide" below to be informed of your options.

If you do not have a ChatGPT account associated with your Kent email address, please follow the setup steps below.

Important note

Please remember that ChatGPT Edu will not be available for staff until Monday 23rd March.

For students, ChatGPT Edu will become available on 20th April 2026.

Please visit this page periodically for updates on exact release dates for students.

You will not be able to access ChatGPT Edu until the tool is formally launched for staff and students. Please do not attempt to create an account before this date and follow the guidance below once the tool has been launched to access your account.

Step-by-step setup guide

Ensure you have completed all mandatory training. For students, this is the first four sections of the "Developing your AI Literacy" module on Moodle. A links to the module is provided here:

Student training: "Developing your AI Literacy" (click here to access)

If you have only just completed your mandatory training, please note that it can take up to 24 hours to receive an invite to set up your ChatGPT account. Please do not attempt to set up your account until you have received this email and followed the link.

Once you have done this, enter your Kent email address in the format abc123@kent.ac.uk. For students with multiple IT accounts (such as those in KMMS), please note that you must use your Kent login.

Click the option of "University of Kent".

You will be signed in and directed back to the ChatGPT homepage. Your setup is complete!

You will be informed that you have been added to a ChatGPT Edu workspace. You will be also asked whether you wish to transfer existing chat history and GPTs or whether you wish to export and delete your existing chat history. Paid personal subscriptions are automatically cancelled as part of the migration process.

Please note that this decision is irreversible.

Important things to remember

Please remember that:

  • You should log out after each use if you access your account on a public or shared device as you will not automatically be logged out.
  • You should only utilise your University-affiliated ChatGPT account for University work.
  • You should not input any personal data into ChatGPT Edu.
