Finding a placement

As a placement year student it is your responsibility to find and secure your placement, firstly you must understand the academic requirements for your subjects connected to your placement year, you will have access to the Placement Preparation Journey, in addition to a wide range of workshops and support from the Placements and wider careers team. 

Employers recruit at varied times of the year dependant on the size and type of company and the industry. the table below can give you an idea of a typical Placement recruitment cycle. 

Larger Companies

August - November: Application deadlines advertised and applications open.

September - January: First Stage Application. 

November - April: Second and Third stage selection.

December - May: Offers issued to students. 

July - September: Placement year begins. 

Smaller Companies

November - June: Application deadlines advertised and applications open. 

November - June: First stage application. 

January - July: Second and Third stage selection. 

January - August: Offers issued to students. 

July - August: Placement year begins. 

  With these dates in mind you need to be application ready by Summer of Stage 1. Don't worry if you are a little behind though we have a dedicated Placements Team to support you in getting you to where you need to be.   

Finding a Placement Abroad

Should you consider a placement overseas, either in Europe or the rest of the world, please provide full details to the Placement Team before accepting the position so that we can ensure the placement meets the programme criteria and necessary duration. Before you leave for your placement year you will complete a thorough risk assessment and be required to obtain the correct insurance. You can obtain this cover via the University's insurance department at no extra charge.

Where to find Placement Year Opportunities

There are a number of websites you can find advertised Placement Year opportunities. 

Make sure you check whether these websites can allow you to register an account with them so you can receive targeted emails with reminders when opportunities go live and with opportunities in line with your preferences.
